In general, I've tended to avoid setting specific yearly resolutions and goals because of how easy it is for someone like me to lose track. The only ones which had some measure of success were more of habits that I would slowly work in, such as making sure I had a cup of water or green tea on my table everyday as I work and getting three workouts in a week.
I'm going to try something different this year. I've mapped out specific actions I want to do in the different areas of my life according to Zig Ziglar's wheel of life, and have clear measurement tables drawn up. Each of the areas have been printed out in A3 and posted up on the wall in my study room at home so that I can mark down my progress.
I'm not going to go into the details of what the specific actions are because I'm sure that I'm not going to fulfill 100% of what I set out to do this year and some of them are quite personal but I'm going to make some bold claims about what I'm going to achieve by the end of the year:
Spiritual: Sold out, wholehearted servanthood with a consistent and deep faith.
Physical: I'm going to completely transform my body and fitness.
Intellectual: I'm going to finish writing a novel on November 30. And...I'm going to read over 30 books by December.
Family: I'm not going to look back and regret a lack of time or quality moments with my family.
Social: The friendships in my inner circle are going to be such strong pillars for each other.
Career: This will be a year of experimentation to find the right transitory job before I go full time in five years.
Financial: Due to the career goal, in this area, I just want to end the year with a fully funded emergency fund of six months of family expenses.
Some of the tasks and targets I've set are pretty ambitious but it's coming to the end of February and I'm reasonably happy with what I've accomplished so far, and the direction I'm heading.
It helps that for some of the items, once I take the initiative to get started, I actually quite enjoy it such as setting aside one to one time with each of the girls in my life, getting a good workout in and losing myself in a good book.
It's been a good start.
